Where does one honeymoon, when you live in paradise already? This is the question my husband and I asked ourselves when trying to pinpoint where our first trip as husband and wife would be. The Maldives was a dream destination that I honestly didn’t think would be a possibility for us. Fortunately, in lieu of registering for pots and pans and other various home items for Wedding gifts, we set up a HoneyFund to help us take an awesome trip. That combined with a lot of saving and planning, we were able to take the honeymoon of a lifetime in the Maldives.

For those of you who don’t know, the Maldives are a cluster of many islands and atolls located off the South West coast of India, in the Indian Ocean. It’s that picturesque clear blue waters, white sand beaches, and over the water bungalows that you only dream about, or see photos of on a bucket list traveling post.IMG_0737

There are literally a hundred different resorts and/or hotels to choose from..most are situated on their own little island or atoll. Choosing a resort right for you can be tricky at first, because everything looks so appealing. The best way to narrow down your search is to figure out a budget. What are you willing to spend? Also does the resort offer an all inclusive package. Most of them will offer either a half/full board option or an all-inclusive food and beverage package. If you are staying at an island resort, it is in your best interest to take advantage of one of those options. The reason being , you are on a small pretty isolated island, so what you eat is the food or restaurants that the resort has to offer. Prices will be high for individual purchases so it makes sense to include your food into the price of your daily stay.

After you figure out your budget, next is deciding what you want to do while you’re there. Are you looking for adventure? Relaxation? A little bit of both? Most of the islands will offer various excursions that will fit your needs. One of the main reasons we choose the Maldives is because of it’s renowned scuba diving sites. My husband is a very experienced diver and has dove all over the World. After we met, I decided to get certified so we could share his passion together, so honeymooning in the Maldives was the perfect fit for us.

Keeping in mind that we were traveling from Hawaii and the Maldives are located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, it took us over 20 hours of flights, two over night hotels, and a seaplane to get us to our final destination…what was waiting for us was definitely worth the cramped spaces, early mornings, and sleepless flights it took to get there.

The resort we ended up choosing was Veligandu Island Resort and Spa. They offered everything we wanted, was reasonably priced (for the Maldives) and literally was a dream, better than the pictures kind of paradise.

One of the best things about the resort we choose was the casual, laid-back atmosphere. We felt as if we were the only the people on the island sometimes, besides the round-the-clock service that was at our disposal. We spent our days lounging by the pool, getting couples massages by the ocean, scuba diving, drinking cocktails in the bar completely made of sand. The Island was made for you to be barefoot all the time, no shoes required anywhere. And the water bungalows are not only beautiful but private perfect for barely clothed sunbathing .

Welcome to our humble bungalow… No shoes, no shirts, no problems.

If I’ve never wanted to say goodbye to anywhere, the Maldives tops the list. But all good things must come to end.. especially when your bank account cant support the luxury life for long.
